A measuring rod (from the German Stange, meaning "rod" or "bar," and the Latin instrumentum, meaning "tool") is the general name for a series of devices used to measure the internal and external dimensions of parts.

Due to its simple design, measurement reliability, and ease of use, the bar gauge can be considered one of the most popular tools for measuring length.

Rod gauges are a group of universal measuring instruments that are currently used in various industries, including manufacturing, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, repair shops, etc., to measure internal and external dimensions up to 4000 mm and to perform other measurement-related tasks.

When measuring with a rod gauge, a direct measurement method is used, which makes it possible to obtain the actual value of the measured quantity.

Measuring rods come in a wide range of designs that differ in the configuration of the measuring surfaces and their location. Special-purpose measuring rods are widely used for measuring the external and internal dimensions of grooves, slots, channels, distances between axes, wall thicknesses, and for measuring small diameters.

Bar gauges can be equipped with auxiliary measuring surfaces and attachments to increase the functionality of the tool, for example, for measuring shoulders, heights, etc.

Calipers include depth gauges, vernier calipers, caliper compasses, and tooth gauges.

A vernier caliper is a metalworking tool. It is used to measure heights, mark parts, and measure the depth of holes. A vernier caliper is similar to a caliper but is mounted on a base in a vertical plane.

Depth gauge - used to measure depths, grooves, slots, ledges, etc. The main difference from a caliper is the absence of movable jaws on the rod. A depth gauge consists of a rod for taking measurements and a frame with a vernier scale. When measuring, the working part of the rod is inserted into the groove being measured, and the frame with the vernier scale is lowered to the stop and fixes the measurement reading.

Microtech currently manufactures both mechanical and digital depth gauges.
